MMOexp POE: Use Efficient Map Device Options
Mercenary farming has become a strong currency strategy in Path of Exile, combining fast map clears with POE currency consistent raw Divine Orb drops and the chance to uncover extremely valuable loot. With the right setup, the strategy can generate impressive returns without requiring expensive mapping investments.
This guide covers the core Mercenary boss-rush setup, the two main farming variants, white maps versus eight-mod maps, Atlas passive choices, optimal map layouts, Mercenary pricing, and the most important techniques for maximizing profit.
Overview of the Mercenary Boss Rush Strategy
The basic strategy is straightforward: enter a fast map, find and kill the Mercenary, collect valuable rewards, kill the boss, and immediately leave.
Tier 0 maps are particularly effective because they can be completed extremely quickly. For fast characters, a sub-30-second map cycle allows you to maximize the number of Mercenary encounters per hour.
Typical returns can vary significantly depending on clear speed, luck, Mercenary drops, and anomaly rewards. A fast player may target roughly 15–20 Divine Orbs per hour before jackpot drops, while slower characters may see around 8–10 Divines per hour.
The major upside is the possibility of exceptional belt drops, including Mageblood and Headhunter, which can dramatically increase overall profits.
Core Mechanics: Speed Is Everything
The most important factor in Mercenary farming is not maximum map quantity—it is encounters per hour.
Your goal should be to:
Enter the map quickly.
Find the Mercenary immediately.
Kill the boss with minimal detours.
Pick up valuable currency and unique items.
Leave as soon as the valuable objectives are complete.
Fast boss-rush layouts are therefore ideal. City Square is particularly effective because its layout is predictable and provides quick access to the boss arena.
The more maps you complete, the more opportunities you create for Mercenary loot, anomalies, and jackpot rewards.
Two Main Mercenary Farming Variants
Variant 1: Basic Boss Rush
This is the recommended version for weaker characters and players who want consistent profits with minimal risk.
Scarab Setup:
Scarab of Renown
Scarab of Infamy
How to run it:
Use a white, unmodified map or a Templar Astrolabe.
Rush directly toward the boss.
Find and kill the Mercenary.
Kill the map boss.
Pick up valuable rewards.
Leave immediately.
There is no reason to fully clear the map. The objective is to complete as many efficient encounters as possible.
Because the setup requires little investment and has relatively low danger, it is also a good starting point for testing the strategy.
Variant 2: Full-Clear Anarchy Setup
The second version adds more mechanics and significantly increases the number of enemies and potential rewards.
Scarab Setup:
Scarab of Renown
Scarab of Infamy
Surprising Alliances Scarab
2x Anarchy Scarabs
Instead of rushing straight to the boss, fully clear the map and kill the Wild Mercenaries and Rogue Exiles that appear.
This setup has a considerably higher ceiling, but it also introduces much more danger.
The Ruckus Atlas node gives an 8% chance for 20 additional Rogue Exiles, which can create huge enemy packs. Wild Mercenaries also become more dangerous as additional Mercenaries appear in the area.
If your build struggles against high-density encounters, the basic boss-rush variant will usually provide better real-world profits because you can run it faster and die less often.
White Maps vs. Eight-Mod Maps
Choosing between white maps and eight-mod maps depends heavily on your character's strength.
White Maps
Advantages:
Extremely fast clears
Low risk
Minimal preparation
Ideal for weaker builds
Disadvantages:
Fewer anomalies
Less ground loot
Lower overall map-based rewards
White maps are best when your primary objective is maximizing Mercenary encounters per hour.
Eight-Mod Maps
Advantages:
More anomalies
More ground loot
Higher potential map rewards
Better returns for powerful characters
Disadvantages:
More dangerous enemies
Slower clears
Higher death risk
An important detail is that Mercenaries themselves do not gain additional loot simply because the map has more modifiers. The advantage of eight-mod maps comes from the additional rewards generated by the rest of the map, including regular monsters, bosses, and anomalies.
If eight-mod maps double your clear time, the additional loot may not compensate for the lost encounters. Use them only when your build can clear them efficiently.
Best Map: City Square
City Square is one of the best choices for this strategy because its layout is compact and predictable.
Its main advantages include:
A centrally located boss arena
Consistent layout
Fast boss access
Minimal travel time
Convenient access to valuable anomaly locations
The goal is to reduce downtime between Mercenary encounters rather than maximize the amount of content cleared in each individual map.
Why the Bottom-Left Quadrant Matters
The bottom-left section of the map can provide access to particularly valuable anomalies, including:
The Gambler District
Kadira
The Gambler District deserves special attention because it can produce significant currency rewards.
If you are short on gold, you do not necessarily need to open every available option. Opening three or four times can preserve resources while still giving you access to the potential high-value rewards.
Atlas Passive Tree Setup
Your Atlas strategy should change depending on whether you are running white maps or eight-mod maps.
Atlas Tree for Eight-Mod Maps
When using heavily modified maps, invest in map-effect and quantity-related nodes.
Prioritize:
Map effect wheels
Quantity bonuses
Guaranteed reward tiles
Anomaly-related value where appropriate
The important distinction is that map modifiers primarily improve the map's other rewards, not the Mercenary's inherent loot.
Atlas Tree for White Maps
If you are farming unmodified maps purely for speed, map-effect and quantity investment becomes less important.
Instead, consider guaranteed reward mechanics such as:
Heist caches
Lost Shipments
Other guaranteed-reward nodes
These provide additional value without requiring you to slow down your boss rush.
Atlas Setup for Anarchy
The full-clear variant requires additional investment into the Anarchy side of the tree.
The Ruckus node is particularly important because of its chance to spawn large groups of Rogue Exiles.
Make sure your character has enough damage and defenses before committing to this version.
How to Run Each Map
The basic farming loop is simple:
Enter City Square.
Locate the Mercenary.
Check its equipment and potential value.
Kill the Mercenary.
Kill the map boss.
Pick up valuable currency and uniques.
Check for worthwhile anomaly rewards.
Leave the map.
Immediately start the next map.
The faster you can repeat this loop without unnecessary deaths or backtracking, the better your hourly profit becomes.
What Items Should You Watch For?
Mercenary equipment can contain surprisingly valuable combinations.
Pay particular attention to:
Belts
Belts are one of the most exciting slots because of the potential for extremely valuable drops such as Mageblood or Headhunter.
Currency
The currency slot is another major source of direct profit. Raw Divine Orb drops can form a substantial portion of your hourly income.
Amulets
Amulets can contain valuable unique items or desirable combinations that are worth checking before you leave.
Other equipment slots are generally lower priority, although exceptional weapons or skill combinations can still command high prices.
Lost Shipment Rewards
Do not automatically ignore anomaly procs while boss rushing.
If you trigger a Lost Shipment, it can be worth taking a short detour to collect the rewards.
These encounters can provide valuable items, including rare currency and other desirable loot. The key is to balance the reward against the additional time required.
If a detour takes longer than the expected value of the reward, skip it and continue the boss-rush cycle.
How to Price and Sell Valuable Mercenaries
Some Mercenaries are worth far more than the immediate loot they drop.
A strong Mercenary can potentially sell for several Divine Orbs, while exceptional combinations may be worth significantly more.
When checking a Mercenary, look for:
Multiple desirable aura skills
Grace
Hatred
Determination
Six-linked equipment
Strong ranged abilities
Valuable support-gem combinations
Examples of potentially desirable combinations include Ice Shot with Returning Projectiles, Ballista-based setups, and strong aura combinations such as Grace + Hatred.
Because Mercenary values can change rapidly, use a current pricing tool or trade database before listing an unusual one.
When Should You Make a Warrant?
If you find a Mercenary that looks valuable, obtaining its warrant can be worthwhile.
The key advantage is that the warrant lets you preserve the Mercenary's value for trading rather than simply taking its current loot.
A practical process is:
Challenge the Mercenary.
Obtain the warrant.
Paste the warrant into a current pricing tool.
Check comparable listings.
Sell it if the value justifies the effort.
This adds another potential profit stream to the farming strategy.
Important Tips for Maximizing Profit
Kill Wild Mercenaries First
This is extremely important when using the Anarchy setup.
If the main Mercenary dies before the Wild Mercenaries, some of the Wild Mercenaries can become untargetable, preventing you from collecting their rewards.
Kill the Wild Mercenaries first whenever possible.
Damage-over-time builds can have an advantage because a Wild Mercenary already affected by lethal damage-over-time effects may still die after the primary target is killed.
Do Not Over-Invest in Difficulty
The full Anarchy setup looks attractive because of its higher reward potential, but more enemies do not automatically mean more profit.
Some Mercenary modifiers can be extremely dangerous, particularly powerful fire damage-over-time effects that can kill even well-equipped characters.
For most players, the safer basic setup will produce better long-term results if it allows substantially faster and more consistent map cycles.
Use Efficient Map Device Options
For the basic strategy, a Templar Astrolabe can add extra value without significantly increasing the time required to complete each map.
Additional boss-related Scarab rewards can be especially useful because they increase the value of the boss-rush loop without forcing you into buy POE exalted orbs a full clear.
