Delhi to Udaipur Trip Planner: Best Travel Options and a Practical 3-Day Itinerary

Planning a trip from Delhi to Udaipur is genuinely exciting but the first question isn't "what to see." It's "how much time do I actually have?" The right transport mode, the right number of days, and a realistic itinerary all depend on your leave situation, your budget, and who you're travelling with.

One thing we always tell travellers: don't automatically count your arrival and departure days as full sightseeing days. Once you account for check-in, a meal, and settling in, you've usually lost three to four hours at each end. Build your plan around the hours that are genuinely usable in Udaipur, and you'll come back far more satisfied.

Our general recommendation is to aim for at least three usable days of sightseeing. Udaipur moves at its own pace (it rewards slowness) and rushing through it leaves most people wishing they'd stayed longer.

What Is the Best Way to Travel From Delhi to Udaipur?

There's no single correct answer here. The best option depends entirely on your schedule, your group, and how much of the journey you want to enjoy versus simply endure.

By Flight

Flying is the obvious choice when your leave is short or you're planning a weekend trip. The flight time itself is roughly one to one and a half hours, which is hard to argue with.

That said, include realistic buffer time. Airport transfers from central Delhi, check-in and security, and the cab ride from Maharana Pratap Airport into the city all add up. In our experience, a morning flight from Delhi and a smooth transfer still puts most travellers at their Udaipur hotel by early to mid-afternoon, which is a reasonable start to the trip.

By Train

Train travel suits budget-conscious travellers and those who genuinely enjoy the overnight journey as part of the experience. Several trains connect Delhi (Hazrat Nizamuddin or Delhi Sarai Rohilla) to Udaipur City station, and an overnight departure can save you a night's hotel cost while you sleep. The journey time varies by train, so checking the current timetable on the IRCTC website before booking is essential. Tatkal availability and berth class will also affect both availability and price.

By Road

Driving from Delhi to Udaipur is a long haul, which is roughly 650 to 700 kilometres depending on the route; and should be treated as a proper road trip rather than a quick transfer.

It's most practical when you're planning a longer Rajasthan holiday that includes stops at other cities or when the group is large enough that a hired vehicle makes economic sense.

If you're driving or hiring a cab, plan for overnight breaks or multiple rest stops. Realistic driving time, including fuel and food breaks, runs twelve to fourteen hours at a comfortable pace. Don't try to squeeze this into a single day and then sightsee on arrival.

How Many Days Do You Need for a Delhi to Udaipur Trip?

This is the question that shapes everything else. Here's a practical breakdown.

Three days is enough to cover Udaipur's main highlights at a reasonable pace, mainly the City Palace, Lake Pichola, Fateh Sagar, and the old city lanes. It's tight, but doable if you're reasonably organised and not flying into the city late on day one.

Four days gives you the same sights at a much slower, more enjoyable pace. You get time for a proper sunset boat ride, a longer wander through the old city, and some unhurried meals by the lake. This is our team's recommendation for most independent travellers.

Four to five days becomes necessary when you want to include the Kumbhalgarh Fort and the Ranakpur Jain Temples as day trips. Both are rewarding excursions, but each takes the better part of a full day once you factor in the drive.

Additional days are worth building in if you're travelling both ways by road. The journey itself is long, and arriving or departing exhausted isn't how you want to bookend a trip.

Suggested Three-Day Udaipur Itinerary

This itinerary assumes you arrive by midday on Day 1 after a morning flight. If you're arriving late in the evening, adjust by pushing Day 1's sightseeing to Day 2 and treating your arrival evening simply as a chance to settle in, eat something good by the lake, and sleep.

Day 1: Arrival, City Palace and Lake Pichola

Check in, freshen up, and head to the City Palace; the grandest structure in Udaipur and the best place to orientate yourself with the city's history and layout.

Give it at least two to three hours, especially if you're interested in the museum sections.

Late afternoon, walk down to the Lake Pichola waterfront. A boat ride to the Jag Mandir island is a lovely way to watch the light change over the water.

Boat ride timings and prices vary by season, so pleasecheck with your hotel or local operator on arrival.

Day 2: Fateh Sagar, Saheliyon Ki Bari and Sajjangarh

Start your morning at Fateh Sagar Lake. It's quieter than Lake Pichola and particularly pleasant early in the day. From there, visit Saheliyon Ki Bari, the royal garden built for the queen's companions, which is a lovely, unhurried stop.

In the afternoon, make the drive up to Sajjangarh Palace (also known as the Monsoon Palace) for a panoramic view over the lakes and city below. Entry timing and vehicle access rules at Sajjangarh can change, so confirm locally before heading up.

Day 3: Old City, Shopping and a Relaxed Cultural Experience

Keep this day slower. Spend your morning in the old city lanes around Jagdish Temple and the Bada Bazaar area. This is where Udaipur's everyday life plays out most vividly.

Explore local craft work, miniature paintings, and fabric, but take your time rather than rushing through. In the evening, consider a cultural show if your hotel or a local venue has one running.

Dharohar Folk Dance at Bagore Ki Haveli is a well-known option. So please check current performance timings before planning around it.

If you're a couple or travelling with family, this is also a good day for a lakeside lunch with no agenda.

What Will Affect the Total Trip Cost From Delhi?

There's no single answer to "how much does this trip cost" because the variables are significant. Here's what actually moves the number.

Flight or train fare is usually the biggest variable. Flights booked close to the travel date cost considerably more than those booked weeks in advance. Train fares depend on class and route. Your travel dates; whether they fall on a long weekend, a school holiday or festival season; will affect both availability and price on every component of the trip.

Hotel category has an enormous range in Udaipur. Budget guesthouses, mid-range hotels, heritage havelis, and luxury lake-facing properties all exist across very different price points. Where you stay shapes the entire feel of the trip.

Private versus shared transport within Udaipur, and how you handle airport or station transfers, adds to the total. A private cab for the full stay is more comfortable but costs more than using shared autos or app-based rides where available.

Sightseeing and boat rides carry their own entry fees and activity charges. Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur day trips add driver charges and fuel for the round journey on top of site entry costs.

If you'd like to compare all these components without building the plan from scratch, travellers looking for coordinated stays, transfers and sightseeing can review Udaipur tour packages from Delhi before booking each service separately.

Package or Self-Planned Trip: Which Is Better?

Both work for different kinds of travellers.

Self-booking gives you complete flexibility. You decide your hotel, your pace, which sites to skip and which to linger at. If you're comfortable researching and coordinating independently, this often gives you the best experience per rupee spent. It works particularly well for solo travellers and couples who've done this kind of trip before.

A package makes more sense for families, larger groups, and travellers who want the coordination handled for them. Having your transfers, hotel, and sightseeing arranged in advance removes a lot of friction, especially when you're arriving in an unfamiliar city after a long journey and just want to be told where to go.

One thing to check carefully: does the package include the Delhi–Udaipur transport, or does it start from Udaipur? This distinction matters enormously for the overall cost comparison.

A package that begins in Udaipur is priced very differently from one that includes your flight or train from Delhi. Always verify this before comparing prices across providers.

Who Should Choose a Customised Itinerary?

Some travellers benefit much more from a tailored plan than a standard package. In our experience, the following groups almost always find a customised itinerary worth it.

Families with children need flexibility in pace and the right mix of engaging and relaxing stops. Senior citizens need comfortable, reliable transport and hotels that aren't three flights of stairs above the nearest taxi. Couples looking for lake-facing rooms and a romantic pace need accommodation matched to the view, not just the price.

Groups requiring a larger vehicle; whether a Tempo Traveller or an innova for six, need that logistics sorted in advance. And travellers with early departures or late arrivals need an itinerary that accounts for those edges rather than ignoring them.

If any of these apply to you, a customised plan will serve you far better than an off-the-shelf itinerary. WhatsApp us with your travel dates and group size. We'll map out the usable hours and build around them.

The Bottom Line

Udaipur is one of those cities that genuinely rewards the traveller who arrives without a frantic checklist. Choose your transport mode first as that decision defines how many real hours you have in the city. Then build your itinerary around those hours, not around an aspirational list of everything you think you should see.

Three days is a satisfying trip. Four is better. Five, with Kumbhalgarh or Ranakpur, is the kind of trip people talk about for years.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best way to travel from Delhi to Udaipur?

It depends on your available time and budget. Flying is fastest and best for short trips or weekend travel. Trains suit budget travellers and overnight journeys well, while road travel works best when you have a longer holiday.

How many days are enough for a Delhi to Udaipur trip?

Three days covers the main sights at a reasonable pace. Four days is more comfortable and allows for a slower, more enjoyable experience.

Can Udaipur be covered on a weekend from Delhi?

It's possible by flight, but only just. A Friday evening or early Saturday morning departure gives you roughly two usable days before a Sunday return. You'll cover the City Palace, Lake Pichola and perhaps Fateh Sagar; but the pace will be brisk. A long weekend of three to four days works considerably better and leaves room to actually enjoy the city.

Is travelling from Delhi to Udaipur by road practical?

It is practical, but it's a long drive…roughly 650 to 700 kilometres, and realistic travel time with breaks runs twelve to fourteen hours or more. It makes the most sense for large groups, for travellers who enjoy the road journey, or for those combining Udaipur with other Rajasthan stops.

Do Udaipur packages from Delhi include flights or trains?

This varies significantly by provider and by the specific package. You must check the package details carefully before comparing prices, as a package that includes flights will naturally cost more than one that begins only after you've arrived.

What is the best season for a Delhi to Udaipur trip?

October to March is generally considered the most comfortable time to visit Udaipur. The weather is pleasant, the lakes are typically well-filled after the monsoon, and most sightseeing is manageable without the intensity of summer heat.
