When I think about what I've accomplished in the past few years, I keep coming back to this idea of "at the end of flow." It's a phrase that's been stuck in my head since I started exploring the concept of flow states in my own creative work. DLEJ - I'm pretty sure it's a nod to the Dutch concept of "gebruiksconcepten" or "useful concepts" - but I've found it to be much more than that. It's a metaphor for the end of the line, the last drop of adrenaline, the exhausted high of pushing through a project until it's done.

What is This Thing Called Flow?

People talk about flow like it's some kind of magic trick - the point at which you're completely absorbed in what you're doing and time just melts away. But for me, flow is more like a fragile state of being, one that's easily disrupted by distractions, self-doubt, or just plain old burnout. When I'm in flow, I'm usually working on something that's challenging but not impossible - a project that I've been putting off for weeks because I know it's going to take some serious effort to get right. It's that sweet spot where everything feels just out of reach, but not quite. And then there's the other side of flow - the crash that follows. This is the part where you're left feeling drained, spent, and wondering why you even bothered in the first place. It's like you've been on a rollercoaster and you're now slowly coming back down to earth, your stomach still in your throat. I've been here more times than I can count, and I'm starting to realize that this is where the real growth happens - not in the flow itself, but in the aftermath, when you're forced to confront what you've accomplished (or not).

When I said "Flow is Not a Destination," I was attempting to convey a notion that has puzzled me for quite some time now: how we as humans tend to romanticize the concept of flow. Like an elusive mirage in the desert, we envision it as a mystical, unattainable state – a destination we strive to reach, but inevitably, we're left with nothing but the dust of our own disillusionment.

For those unfamiliar with the term, flow (or the 'zone') refers to the state of heightened creativity and productivity wherein an individual becomes completely immersed in their work, with little to no consciousness of their external surroundings. Sounds idyllic, right? But here's the thing: we often approach this state with an air of expectation, like it's something we can deliberately achieve through sheer willpower or a combination of the right tools, and if we don't find ourselves in this state, we might as well pack our bags and head home.

That's why I'd like to stress the importance of not only understanding the concept of flow, but also what lies beyond it – i.e., the actual process of creating, not just the end result. Think about it like this: if you're constantly chasing after the "zone," you'll never truly enjoy the journey. Instead, you'll find yourself caught in a never-ending loop of disappointment, as every attempt to reach that elusive state ends in frustration.

But what if I told you that flow isn't just a destination – it's a mindset? When we approach our work with an open, non-judgmental attitude, we become more receptive to the creative process, and it's only then that we begin to tap into our full potential. It's not about achieving some mythical state of flow; it's about embracing the messy, often painful process of creation itself.

  • Start by letting go of your expectations. Understand that flow is not a guaranteed outcome, and that every creative endeavor is unique in its own right.
  • Develop a growth mindset, and be open to learning from your mistakes. This will help you approach challenges with a more positive attitude, rather than getting bogged down by self-doubt.
  • Focus on the process, not just the end result. Enjoy the journey, and don't get too caught up in achieving some mythical state of flow.
