I still remember the first mp3 player I ever owned – a clunky, chunky thing with a screen that was barely bigger than a postage stamp. It was 2005, and I was in the midst of my first year of college. The concept of carrying an entire music library with me wherever I went was revolutionary, and I was hooked. Mp3s were the future, and I was determined to be a part of it.

When Sound Quality Took a Backseat to Convenience

As the years went by, the mp3 format became ubiquitous. We started to see the rise of portable mp3 players like the iPod, and soon after, smartphones with music streaming capabilities became the norm. But with this newfound convenience came a trade-off: sound quality. Gone were the days of warm, rich audio that filled the room with music. Instead, we were left with tinny, compressed tracks that sounded like they were recorded in a tin can. And yet, we accepted it. We became desensitized to the poor sound quality, chalking it up to the price of convenience. I remember listening to music on my way to class, earbuds jammed in my ears, and wondering why it sounded so...off. The highs were piercing, the lows were muddy, and the overall effect was a cacophony of sound that made my head hurt. And yet, I continued to listen to my music this way, rationalizing that it was better than nothing. But it wasn't better than nothing – it was worse.
