In the public cloud, vRouters are essential for building complex network topologies, connecting virtual private clouds (VPCs) together, and establishing secure connections back to on-premises data centers. For telecommunications service providers, vRouters are a foundational element of their NFV strategy. They are used to create virtual Customer Premises Equipment (vCPE), where services like routing and firewalling are moved from a physical box at the customer site into the provider's cloud, allowing for remote management and rapid service activation. They are also used within the mobile core network and as cell site gateways. Enterprises are leveraging vRouters as a key component of their Software-Defined WAN (SD-WAN) solutions, deploying them at branch offices to provide intelligent, application-aware routing over multiple internet links. Furthermore, the low cost and ease of deployment make vRouters an ideal tool for creating isolated lab, development, and testing environments that accurately mimic production network configurations without the need for expensive physical hardware. Each of these use cases highlights the vRouter's versatility as a flexible, software-defined building block for modern network architectures.

This includes companies that have been pioneers in the software routing space. A third and highly influential force is the open-source community. Projects like FRRouting (FRR) and the Linux kernel's own networking stack provide powerful, open-source routing capabilities that are used as the foundation for many commercial vRouter products and are widely deployed by hyperscale cloud providers and large enterprises who prefer an open, customizable approach.
