The Strategic Importance for Mobile Network Operators

For mobile network operators (MNOs), adopting vEPC is a critical strategic move with far-reaching implications. The most immediate benefit is a significant reduction in both Capital Expenditure (CapEx) and Operational Expenditure (OpEx). By replacing expensive, proprietary hardware with standard COTS servers, operators can dramatically lower their initial investment costs. The automation and centralized management capabilities of vEPC also reduce OpEx by simplifying network operations and reducing the need for manual intervention. Beyond cost savings, vEPC provides the service agility necessary to compete in a fast-moving market. Operators can rapidly develop, test, and deploy new services—such as specialized IoT connectivity packages or enterprise private networks—in a matter of weeks or even days, rather than the months or years it would take with a hardware-based core. This ability to innovate quickly is crucial for generating new revenue streams and differentiating their offerings. Most importantly, vEPC is the essential stepping stone to 5G.
